Meet Ayokay’s newest Front-End Web Developer and Support Specialist, Andrew Choi! Andrew joined our team to help with everything web-related, from WordPress troubleshooting to client support. We sat down with him to discuss his journey to Ayokay, his interest in app development, and what he wishes people knew about his role.
Q&A with Andrew
Q: What is your position at Ayokay and what does that entail?
A: I am the front-end web developer and support specialist. So I help out with the web side of things, like checking on WordPress and whatever else comes up. But I also manage the support desk and respond to clients on support-related issues.
Q: What brought you to Ayokay?
A: After my last company shut down, I needed a place in the line of work I was familiar with. And Ayokay reached out to me. Thanks to some connections, I was able to get work in a very familiar industry and it was easy to pick up from what I had learned at my previous company.
Q: What’s one thing that you wish people knew about your job?
A: That I also help out on web work as well. I’m not just managing the support desk.
Q: What are some areas you’d like to learn more about while at Ayokay?
A: I think the app and domain side of things. But I’m also interested in learning how to make apps and app development.
Q: Do you have any experience doing any of that?
A: Uh, a little. I know how to make web apps, but I don’t know how to make, like, app apps.
Q: I notice you are also interested in video game development. How does your background in video game development inform the work you do as a front-end developer and support specialist?
A: Not much, but I’m sure there’s some small transferable skills here and there. I guess it has more to do with development stuff, like programming. I’m at least familiar with the programming jargon. That could be applicable to a lot of code-related stuff.
Q: Do you have any experience in your past that you think helps you better communicate with clients? Whether via the support desk or in web projects.
A: Yeah, obviously, that’s my last position, but also when I was in game development, I worked on a project with the Navy. It was with the full team, and in this full team, I was the head of development. So I got to talk directly with the Navy, even if I was just a little shy.
Q: What were they like as a client?
A: They were very nice, they were very kind, even if it felt like they didn’t know what they were wanting.
Q: What strategies do you use to figure out what a client wants?
A: I often show what we already have and make some suggestions here and there if this is what they actually want and if they like the current path of what’s being done. And we also talk about what we’re going to be doing in the future and ask if there’s anything that needs to be changed.
Q: What do you like to do for fun?
A: Obviously, game development. I also like to play games. I usually talk with friends a lot – occasionally I’ll watch a movie but that’s only if that movie is on the streaming service I have, which more often than not, is not
Q: Do you have a current favorite game that you’ve been playing?
A: I’ve been playing a very niche game called Crypt of the Necrodancer. It’s a rhythm-based dungeon crawler I’ve been playing a lot. It’s very fun and very hard.
